New Daveyton clinic unveiled

Hundreds of local residents came together to witness the unveiling of the new state of the art Daveyton East Clinic, situated on Eiselen Street.

The clinic was opened on December 1, in the spirit of World Aids Day.

Each year on this day, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) joins the global community in the fight against HIV/Aids and uses the opportunity to show the strides they are making in the fight against it.

The clinic was officially opened by Gold One International, in partnership with the City of Ekurhuleni.

This R25-million extension to the clinic was built by Gold One as part of the Modder East Operations social and labour commitment to the South African Department of Mineral resources.

The expanded clinic is now equipped to provide basic healthcare services to more than 8 000 patients per month with the support of approximately 70 nursing staff.

The clinic is divided into three primary units for acute medical care, care for mothers and infants and care for chronic conditions such as diabetes, TB, and HIV/AIDS.

Women’s health services, care and counselling for rehabilitation and mental health and a dedicated youth programme are also facilitated.

Presenting and handing over of the clinic, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Gold One, Izak Marais, said as a mining company, they believe it’s important for them to invest in their employees and communities in which they operate.

Mondli Gungubele, mayor of the EMM, was glad the day had come to unveil the facility.

“We have been waiting for this day with bated breath because we understand the importance of this facility to the lives of our people,” added Gungubele.

“There couldn’t be any better day to open this facility than on World Aids Day.”

He thanked Gold One for the facility.

Gungubele said, as a staunch advocate of partnership, he knows that government alone can only do so much, but through such partnerships, they can achieve even more.

“Today we live to witness the true spirit of a partnership that works and we wish other companies in our space can follow suit so that together we can take Ekurhuleni forward.”

As the ceremony proceeded, a candle of hope was light to remember those who died from Aids.

Daveyton resident Maria Mnisi (68) said she is very happy with the upgrade, as the clinic will now cater for more people than before.

The clinic will operate Monday to Friday, from 7.30am to 4.30pm.

The crowd was entertained with music from the Gold One choir and Ekurhuleni health practitioners conducted comprehensive health screening throughout the day.
