Domestic workers’ wages increase

The Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant, has announced that wages for domestic workers will be adjusted upward from December 1.

The adjustment will be made as part of Sectoral Determination Seven, which will ensure that employees who work more than 27 hours in Area A (within a metropolitan area) should not to be paid less than R11.44 an hour.

An employee working less than 27 hours in Area A should not be paid less than R13.39 an hour.

“Sectorial determination aims to protect workers in vulnerable sectors, such as the domestic worker sector, by establishing minimum wages, working hours, number of leave days and termination rules,” said Department of Labour acting spokesperson Mokgadi Pela.

The new determination will be effective until the end of November 2016.
