Two police officers shot on High Road
Two Crystal Park SAPS police officers are in a stable condition after being shot on the corner of High and Thomas roads this morning, at around 3.30am.
Brig Poobalan Subbiah, acting Benoni SAPS cluster commander, told the City Times the officers were driving in separate vehicles behind a marked courier vehicle, as they were running checks on it.
The acting cluster commander said the courier vehicle was hijacked on the N12 this morning, near Delmas.
One of the hijackers was shot by the courier vehicle’s support team.
He is still alive.
About 30 minutes after the hijacking, two police officers, in separate vehicles, spotted the vehicle.
Police believe the driver of the courier vehicle saw police behind him, and called for back up.
He said several other people arrived on scene to assist the driver of the courier vehicle.
The gunmen shot at police, with police returning fire.
Three suspects have been arrested and three rifles were recovered.
An attempted murder case has been opened at this stage.
More charges may be added.
