Burst pipe in Fairleads is final straw

Water was streaming down Vlei Road today, November 11.

Although the leak was tended to within the 48-hour period set out by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), residents from the area feel the wastage was still too much, especially with the current water crisis.

Country View chairman Ricky Coelho reported the burst pipe in Fairleads at around 3am.

He was disappointed when EMM workers arrived only five hours later.

He said residents in the area were angered by the wastage, as they are continually reminded to use water sparingly.

“They have to sort out [the water in Benoni] now; it’s a joke,” said Coelho.

He was glad that the pipe was fixed within nine hours after he had reported the leak, but queried why the relevant people were notified of the problem only three hours after he logged the emergency call.

Although Ekurhuleni is facing low water levels at many of its reservoirs, the city has not yet implemented water restrictions.
