UPDATE: Man arrested for setting ex-girlfriend’s shack on fire

Police have arrested a man for allegedly setting his ex-girlfriend's shack alight, which lead to a few other shacks being damaged by the fire.

Ekurhuleni Emergency Services were at 6pm this afternoon still on scene at an informal settlement on Van Wyk Road, in Brentwood Park.

Col Martin van Nieuwenhuizen, Benoni SAPS acting station commander, told the City Times this evening that a man was arrested and taken to hospital following the incident.

“He and his ex-girlfriend were fighting with each other,” said Van Nieuwenhuizen.

“When she left, he set the shack on fire.”

Van Nieuwenhuizen said the community members resorted to assaulting the man with anything they could get their hands on following the fire.

This blaze is believed to have spread to a few other shacks at the informal settlement.

The suspect was taken to hospital for medical treatment.

He will be charged with arson.

No one else has been arrested.
