Sick bunnies will be put down

The bunnies at the Benoni Bunny Park, who are infected with mange, will be euthanised.

This is according to Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

He told the City Times this afternoon that an enclosure will also be built at the Bunny Park, in which bunnies will be housed.

He could not say when the bunnies will be euthanised, but said the municipality took the decision before the closure of the park.

The park was reopened on Friday, after it was closed to the public for seven days in order for an assessment to be conducted into the health of the animals and the facility.

Gadebe said this report would be released as soon as it has been presented to interested parties at the park.

The Bunny Park Animals 911 Group, who have been feeding the animals at the park for several weeks, said they are saddened by the news that bunnies will be put down.

“It is with much sadness that this is the park [department’s] chosen route,” said the group.

“Mange (except in severe cases) can be treated.”
