Bunny Park group ‘exceptionally disappointed’ that park is reopened

Members of the Bunny Park Animals 911 Group are "exceptionally disappointed" that the park has be reopened, saying the municipality has been underhanded in the way in which they went about reopening the park.

A furore erupted in July as claims were made of animal neglect and diseased animals at the Benoni landmark.

The Bunny Park Animals 911 Group told the City Times this afternoon that they were due to meet with officials of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) and other stakeholders to discuss the progress into an assessment of the park and its animals today.

This meeting was cancelled on Wednesday.

The facility was closed exactly a week ago to allow for a state veterinarian to conduct and compile a report.

It is understood that a national state and two independent veterinarians assessed conditions at the Bunny Park.

The findings were due to be released next week, after which discussions would take place to determine what action should be taken.

Members of the group told the City Times this afternoon they are shocked by the news of the reopening, as they had not been consulted.

“Nothing is going to to change there, these animals will continue suffering,” the group said.

The Bunny Park Animals 911 Group are concerned that a comprehensive test has not been undertaken and that there are diseased animals within the park.

EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the report will be released in due course.

Meanwhile, the Bunny Park Animals 911 Group will continue feeding animals at the park three times a week.

They are still welcoming animal food donations from the public.
