Teacher goes the extra mile

Etwatwa teacher Nurse Pitso was nominated as one of the eight finalists in the Woolworths World Teachers' Day competition.

She is a teacher at B.B Myataza Secondary School.

This annual event is held to promote United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture (Unesco) World Teachers’ Day, on October 5, by inviting South African children to recognise and appreciate teachers who have made a life-changing difference to them.

Pitso was nominated by one of her pupils, Cebolwethu Tebe, who will have a lifelong memory of her.

Tebe’s mother died during his final exam period.

Pitso lovingly coached him through the trauma and, with her great kindness, even contributed to the funeral which the family struggled to afford.

On October 9, she flew to Cape Town with the other seven finalists to attend the final announcement of the top three winners.

Even though she didn’t place in the top three, the hardworking teacher will continue to love and inspire her pupils.
