Robbery suspect hands himself over

A 21-year-old man handed himself over to the Crystal Park police on Friday, after learning that they were searching for him.

Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz said the man handed himself over at the Crystal Park Police Station in the presence of his attorney.

This comes after a 22-year-old suspect was arrested for armed robbery at a house in Wattville, on October 1.

Maritz said the men are believed to have been accomplices in at least four armed street robberies.

She said an individual was robbed on Oriole Crescent, on October 1.

“Fortunately the victim kept calm during the robbery and managed to take down the vehicle’s registration number,” she added.

“The information was followed up by the Crystal Park detectives and Benoni cluster task team and led them to a house in Wattville.”

Police arrested the man at a home in Wattville and found the car matching the description of the one used in the Oriole Street robbery.

Maritz said police discovered suspected stolen items at another house in Wattville, where an accomplice was believed to be staying.

When police arrived, he had fled.

Both men were charged with armed robbery and pointing a firearm.

Police said several other robbery cases were reported in Benoni, where people were robbed of cellphones, jewellery and cash.

Anyone who fell victim to a street robbery recently, is urged to call Capt Glen Whitford on 082 822 7608, to help police investigate possible links.
