Cycling in the spirit of giving back

A St Dunstan’s College alumnus, Keshia de Klerk (29), will ride for a difference in the Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge on November 15.

De Klerk will saddle up in honour of her late father, Steven de Klerk, and will raise funds for the Muriel Brand School bus project.

Her father rode in several 947 Cycle Challenges.

The Brakpan-based Muriel Brand School cares for people with physical disabilities between the ages of three and 18 years.

The bus project was started to seek financial assistance from the public to upgrade its current buses, which serve as a means of transport for their pupils.

De Klerk explained that she heard about the school’s bus project from her mother, Sheryl de Klerk.

“I can’t imagine what it must be like for these children, especially in winter, to be stranded on the side of the road,” said De Klerk.

“The buses often breakdown due to their age and some of these children require medical attention every half an hour.”

De Klerk has never participated in a cycle race, but will look to learn from her father in order to help those less fortunate.

She said she learned from her father that you can never take anything for granted and to always help less fortunate people.

De Klerk needs to raise R750 000 to help the school purchase a new bus.

She challenges everyone to help her make a difference in the lives of these school children by sponsoring her with a minimum of R1/km.
