Sassa conducts review process

A Benoni resident, who has the signing powers for her daughter’s South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) disability grant, is upset after she did not receive the July grant.

According to the resident, she re-registered in April, during the re-registration period, she received her grant in June, but in July it was stopped.

She added that the disability grant was cancelled without her being notified.

According to Steve Mabona, Sassa’s senior marketing and communication’s manager, community members must not confuse the current reviews with the previous re-registration process.

“As per the legislative requirements, Sassa is currently conducting reviews of some social grants,” he said.

“The process simply means that Sassa is verifying whether beneficiaries’ information or status has not changed since the application for their respective social grants, and whether some beneficiaries do still qualify to receive same or not.”

All the affected beneficiaries were issued with letters in January, February and March, to notify them about the review.

Mabona added that, in the event of a social grant beneficiary not honouring Sassa’s invitation for the review process, their social grant will be suspended and subsequently lapsed [stopped]

“To restore a suspended social grant, you must bring along your identity document, proof of residence, three monthly bank statements, if married, a certified copy of the spouse’s bank statement and if unemployed, an affidavit.

“For foster care you will need the extension of a court order, for a disability grant you need a medical report and to visit the nearest Sassa office before the date stipulated in the invitation letter,” Mabona explained.

Social grants beneficiaries will receive their back payments.
