UPDATE: Guard’s firearm and money stolen during cash-in-transit robbery

A G4S Security guard was ambushed during a cash-in-transit robbery at Lakeside Mall, on Monday, September 28.

According to Const Zunickha Essakjee, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, the security guard was leaving Truworths, at the mall, when a man pointed a gun at him.

Six other men also approached him and stole the cash box and the guard’s firearm.

The undisclosed amount of money had been collected from Truworths.

According Angela Pereira, Lakeside Mall marketing manager, the men exited the mall into Tom Jones Street.

“No shots were fired and no injuries were reported,” said Pereira.

She said shopping at the mall continued as normal and the incident is being investigated.

Essakjee said a cash-in-transit case has been opened at the Benoni Police Station and no arrests have been made.

This is the second cash-in-transit robbery at Lakeside Mall’s Truworths store, this year.

In March, a cash-in-transit guard was robbed after he had collected money from a drop-off safe at the store.

The guard’s firearm was also stolen during the robbery.

The robbers allegedly cut open the box and stole the money on the corner of Woburn Avenue and Russel Street.
