Suspected house robber shot dead after ignoring home owner’s request to leave property

A home owner shot dead a suspected house robber at a home in Lakefield this morning (September 15).

Col Martin van Nieuwenhuizen, acting Benoni SAPS station commander, said the two home invaders entered the property on Divot Street at around 5am.

They entered the house by removing the burglar proofing.

The acting station commander said the resident woke up and confronted the two suspects inside the house.

“He (the home owner) said: ‘get out of the house’, and they just ignored him,” said Van Nieuwenhuizen.

The resident retreated and recovered his firearm.

One his return, one of the suspects approached him with a screw driver.

“The owner fired one shot and the deceased died on scene,” added Van Nieuwenhuizen.

He was shot outside the house.

The man’s accomplice dropped the TV and fled on foot.

A case of house robbery and an inquest docket has been opened at the Benoni Police Station.
