DA hands welfare petition to parliament

The DA has submitted a petition to parliament demanding that the Department of Social Development fund East Rand welfare organisations in full for services they provide.

According to the DA, the petition contains over 2 000 signatures obtained from members of the public.

Mike Waters, DA Chief Whip in parliament, said he would like to thank people who took the time to sign the petition.

“These organisations are facing crippling financial shortages, with government underfunding them at between 50 and 77 per cent,” he said.

He added that the next step is for the portfolio committee of social development to deal with the petition.

The petition has also been sent to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

The commission will be given an opportunity to consider the weight of the petition.

“The DA will monitor the matter and will provide feedback to the public,” said Waters.
