Alert municipality to cut or trim your trees

Questions have been asked by the community about whether or not residents are allowed to cut or trim trees that grow on municipal property.

Crystal Park resident Liana Pretorius said two trees were cut down on Henschel Street.

“As far as I know, this is not allowed according to a municipal by-law,” she added.

“We are seeing more trees being mowed down by chainsaws every weekend.”

She claimed that residents said criminals hide in the trees and wait for homeowners to leave their houses.

According to the Ekurhuleni Metro, no person may destroy a tree unless that person has obtained approval from the municipality.

“No tree planted or growing on municipal property, contrary to the provisions hereof, or contrary to access rights provided by any other municipal by-law, may be removed,” said Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni Metro spokesperson.

“Residents who want to cut or trim trees that are part of the municipality’s property must direct their requests to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality Parks Department.”

The appeal to have trees removed or trimmed must be directed to Ekurhuleni’s call centre, on 0860 543 000.
