Ekurhuleni installs CCTV cameras to curb crime

Ekurhuleni city manager Khaya Ngema recently announced plans for the installation of CCTV technology before the end of the financial year.

He said the technology will have a nerve centre where various units will monitor movements, to provide information on crime, disaster management, traffic and quick response to service delivery problems.

“The impact of rolling out CCTV in various areas will give citizens and residents a sense of security – which is the number one mission of video surveillance,” said Themba Gadebe, Ekurhuleni spokesperson.

“This will ensure public safety, efficiently and cost-effectively.”

Gadebe said the technology will also assist in post-investigation, as it will help prosecutors by securing video footage of the incidents.

At the moment, the implementation of the CCTV footage cameras will be done in multiple phases, focusing on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route and high crime areas.

“The system will then be gradually expanded across wider areas, by adding more cameras,” said Gadebe.

At the moment, the rollout is expected to be operational in Kempton Park in June 2016, and will then be followed by various other areas.

The detailed rollout plan will be a function of the following:

  • Fibre rollout plan.
  • Finalisation of open data pro-typing process — which allows the municipality to access private CCTV data feeds.
  • Implementation of converged computing platform (first quarter of 2016).

The CCTVs will be managed from the transport command centre, in Kempton Park.

The footage will also be accessible via the disaster and emergency management services’ CCTV monitoring facility, in Alberton.
