Judgment in Macia murder case postponed

Ilse de Lange, The Citizen reports: The eight former Daveyton policemen accused of murdering Mozambican taxi driver Mido Macia by dragging him behind a police van and assaulting him, will only learn their fate next week.

On August 17, North Gauteng High Court Judge Bert Bam reserved judgment in the trial until August 25.

The prosecution asked for the accused’s conviction on a charge of murder on the basis of dolus eventualis, but the defence argued that the state had failed to prove either culpable homicide or murder and that the former policemen should be acquitted.

Prosecutor Charles Mnisi said it was “most unfortunate” that the accused decided not to come clean to the court about what exactly happened in the cells after Macia was dragged behind a police van.

Macia died alone in a police cell hours after the dragging incident, which took place in full view of the community.

The policemen were arrested after a video of the incident went viral.
