Freshening up for new campaign

A brand new cricket season always brings fresh expectations and positive enthusiasm.

This is true for both the senior and junior sections at Actonville Spurs Cricket Club (ASCC).

The City Times visited the club at their annual open day for player registrations, at their Lords Cricket Grounds home base, to discuss preparations ahead of the commencement of the various Eastern Cricket Union weekend leagues.

Premier League coach Seun Beya, taking on the role for a second successive season, said he believes that Actonville’s elite team is in for a great season.

“Last year we had a fantastic season despite some results not going our way towards the end, but it was awesome to be a part of this club,” said Beya.

“It’s good to be back and I am glad that we still have our captain, Clayton August, leading the team.

“He is the driving force behind this side.”

The coach added that the team has also welcomed some new players, who he hopes will make an immediate impact, to the team.

Beya thanked the club’s executive committee for their valued support in terms of securing players.

“The club as a whole is growing and our junior section is getting better,” he said.

Beya is also the head coach of Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) Regional Performance Centre (RPC) through the Actonville/Wattville hub, a development programme based at the club, which strives to unearth and polish talented players from previously disadvantaged areas.

  • On the junior front, ASCC will hold two tournaments for the u-11 and u-13 age divisions, at Lords.

The u-11s will play their matches on September 12 and September 19, with the u-13s taking to the fields on September 13 and September 20.

The finals for both age groups will be played on Saturday, September 26.
