Old Bens rue missed chances

After a 5-2 victory over Kempton Park on Saturday, July 4, Old Bens Football Club’s first XI were hoping to keep up the momentum when they met Robertsham, at Currin Park, on Saturday, July 11.

The ELFA Super League encounter started with both sides pushing hard for the opening goal, but both teams squandered some good chances.

Bens would eventually open the scoring after Ludick Malele (who netted a brace of goals against Kempton, last week) drove the ball into the bottom corner of the opposition’s net, after latching on to a great defence-splitting through ball from Melosi Ndlovu.

The hosts could not hold onto their advantage, though, as Robertsham soon equalised through a good, long range effort that beat Old Bens goalkeeper Brandon Senneck, to take the teams into the halftime break at 1-1.

In the second stanza, Old Bens played some fantastic two-touch football and created six one-on-one opportunities, none of which were converted.

“We are really missing our two strikers, Bilal Mohammed and Mohammed Brand, who have not played for six weeks due to injury and religious commitments,” said coach Raymond Cloete.

“We should have ended the game with a score of at least five or 6-1, but this was not to be.

“We played so well, but could not finish, which is a national problem at the moment.”

Again, Old Bens goalkeeper Senneck was not tested that much in the game, but he made a match-rescuing save from a break-away late in the second half, to ensure a 1-1 result.

Cloete’s Man of the Match was defender Sibusiso Zwane.

  • Meanwhile Benoni Northerns Football Club’s first XI returned to winning ways with a 4-2 victory over Bedfordview Country Club (BCC) in the ELFA Super League on Saturday at Northerns.
