Man (60) assaulted in home, leg broken

A 60-year-old man was beaten with a metal object on his legs when four robbers entered his Rynfield home on June 1.

His leg was broken in the assault.

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson Tryna Maritz said the man was in his Potgieter Street home when four men driving in a silver vehicle stopped at the residence at around noon.

“Three men lifted the gate off the rail and entered the yard,” said Maritz.

“They opened the sliding door and broke the safety door’s lock and gained entry.

“They then made their way into the house, via the bedroom.”

Maritz said the victim made his way into the bedroom from the kitchen after hearing a loud noise.

He was overpowered by three of the men and hit on the legs with the steel part of a pick.

The man screamed shortly before a cloth was put in his mouth.

The 60-year-old man’s wife heard the racket and made her way to the bedroom.

The robber fled at the sight of her.

“The woman then pressed the panic button and went towards the garage and saw a silver hatchback vehicle leaving the premises,” said Maritz.

The victim was treated on scene by paramedics.

Nothing was taken from the house and no arrests have been made.

A case of house robbery was opened at Benoni SAPS and is being investigated by their detectives.

Maritz said further charges could be added.
