Firsts, youngsters get wins over students

Benoni Rugby Club welcomed Vaal University of Technology (VUT) to their home grounds, at Hoërskool Hans Moore, on Saturday, June 20, in the Valke Merlin League.

The Benoni u-21 team are playing good rugby the moment and made short work of the VUT young guns.

The team are firing on all cylinders and were able to dot down on 10 occasions, despite rotating a few players on the day.

The club’s second XV could not overcome VUT and lost 22-21 in a hard-fought match.

Benoni’s first side made hard work of their clash, but still managed to get the win in a physical match, which ended on 35-31.

The students kept coming back at Benoni whenever the home team scored.

Eighthman Jacques Dorfling had another blinder of a game, scoring four tries in the match, and made his presence felt all over the park.

Lock Daniel van der Merwe and Andrew Edwards also chipped in with a try.

The team are not, however, where they feel they should be and are aiming to get another bonus point win or two in their next few fixtures, to help them compete for one of the top four spots in the Merlin League.

The Benoni club will host Elsburg on Saturday, June 27, followed by back-to-back encounters with East Rand United on July 11 (away) and July 18 (home).
