Player commitment attributed to defeat

The joy of winning the Benoni Derby contested by the first teams of arch-rivals Benoni Northerns and Old Bens football clubs, last week, was short-lived for the former, who suffered a 2-0 defeat away to Olympia, on Saturday, June 6.

Northerns coach Jannie van den Berg stuck to his guns and left out a number of first team regulars in the ELFA Super League clash after they, according to the coach, showed a lack of commitment to the weekly training sessions.

“Like I said at the beginning of the season: ‘players who don’t train won’t play’.

“You can’t miss training in the week and then arrive at a game and expect to play – I have to draw the line somewhere,” he said.

The coach fielded younger players on the day and was also forced to play some players out of position.

On the defeat he commented: “We lost the game from the start and it seems that some of the players lacked motivation due to us shuffling positions again.”

The reserve team also lost 2-0, in their match against Olympia.
