Micro-needling changing the face of anti-ageing treatment

We have all heard the saying: "Age is nothing but a number", and for many women these words ring true.

The Aesthetics Centre, in Northmead, provides what could be your new secret weapon to anti-ageing, a treatment called micro-needling.

Dr Jennifer Irvine owns and runs The Aesthetics Centre.

She is a respected trainer for Allergan in the field of Advanced Botox and filler treatments, and is a trainer in laser and radio frequency assisted liposuction.

The centre’s micro-needling treatment was undertaken by Caxton employee, Rina Myburgh.

Micro-needling has a phenomenal affect on collagen and elastin rejuvenation.

Active ingredients from the products used during the treatment are delivered to the deeper layers of the skin via the micro-channels, thus potentiating their effects.

Before the procedure, Rina’s face was cleaned of make-up in order to avoid the possibility of infection.

Her face was then scanned using a Facial Analysis system which measures pores, wrinkles, blackheads, bacteria and texture.

“This also provides us with series of ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures which enable us to see the changes produced by the treatments,” said Shereen Jacobs, an aesthetician at the clinic.

The Dermapen used during the procedure, consists of multiple needles which pierce the skin at 90 degrees.

This is said to be better than a roller which can tear the skin rather than give an precise puncture.

A topical anaesthetic is applied to face an hour before to make the procedure painless.

“The Dermapen can effectively treat hard to reach places such as around the eyes, nose and lips.

“The vertical delivery of the needles makes it easy to penetrate scar tissue,” said Jacobs.

Rina’s skin was cleansed thoroughly to make sure there are no oily or cosmetic barriers on the skin.

A hyaluronic acid based product was applied to the skin, which allowed the Dermapen to glide smoothly across the skin and improve hydration.

The actual injury caused to skin, during the procedure, stimulates collagen induction leading to the anti-ageing effect of the treatment.

“The treatment causes slight bleeding, as the needles penetrate the skin.

“The needles on the Dermapen are replaced with each patient,” said Jacob.

After the procedure the skin is wiped with cool water to remove any blood.

After each treatment the client is placed under an Omnulux light system which further facilitates healing and results.

A post treatment cream and sunblock is applied.

There is slight redness and swelling after the procedure, especially in more sensitive skin types, and this usually lasts between two to three days.

Rina was impressed with the procedure and said she would probably do it again.

“It’s was very nice, I really could see a difference. On the first day there was a little redness but the results were clear,” said Rina.
