Is Ekurhuleni incapable of providing the services which are our right?

Gail Denman writes by email:

As dawn broke on Saturday May 22 a horrifying sight met our eyes.

Parts of my property were swamped by water pouring from a leaking pipe (reported on December 19, last year – R/N 1293169).

Emergency number conveniently had “technical problems” ALL weekend.

What to do?

Just sit helplessly and watch as this precious, life-saving water was wasted.

It brought to mind how many of this nation walk miles to find water, how we are “encouraged” in the TV ad to conserve water even when brushing teeth and how foolhardy it is to think that one can depend on Ekurhuleni for anything even in a crisis.

Monday dawned and fortunately someone had the presence of mind to physically present himself at Rand Water and insist on action.

A clamp was finally put into place and the crew left.

At first light on Tuesday we were met with further swamping of my property and further loss of thousands of litres of this precious, irreplaceable commodity.

Back to Rand Water and another clamp was used.

Apparently, Ekurhuleni is unable to replace the rusted, rotten pipe so we live from day to day expecting a recurring loss of water, further damage to property and the knowledge that although our rates are readily accepted, Ekurhuleni is incapable of providing the services which are our right.
