Benoni bakers showcase their talents

With 37 entries in this year's Benoni City Times Mother's Day Cake Bake competition, the talent appeared to be limitless, as readers did not hold back in going the extra mile.

Judges and guests were impressed with the variety and creativity displayed, from camera-inspired creations and towering cakes, to carnival-themed cupcakes.

The competition was held on Thursday, May 7, and there were four categories: professional, bakers for fun, tarts (sweet and savoury) and cupcakes.

Miz Gooz Berry owner Berry Legg, who judged the professional category, said she gets goosebumps when she judges the competition.

She acknowledged that the baking industry is competitive and that is why the standard should be high.

Legg awarded the first prize in the professional baking category, and a consultancy worth R4 500 for the baker who shows promise to Percy Nomlala, whose cake was modelled on a Canon camera.

She said he is a good student, because he listened to the advice given to him last year.

“He will be dangerous in Benoni – the texture and layers of his cake were great,” said Legg.

Bianca Greyling won in three categories, baking for fun, cupcakes and tarts.

Judges commended her passion for baking, which is reflected in her work.

Greyling received a purifier worth R1 000 from Buco, a tool set from Buco worth R650 and a pearl Swarovski crystal bracelet worth R800 from Hayward Diamonds.

With the judging process completed, guests from Norkem Park, Rynpark, Eddie House and Daveyton Old Age Home enjoyed tea and a variety of cakes.

Some cakes were also distributed to Goue Kandelare in Farrarmere, the Methodist Old Age Home in Fairleads, Kids Haven and the Salvation Army.

Entertainment by Nico Goosen and Mami Mowedi, from Anua’s School of Music and Arts, kept the guests on their feet with a variety of hit singles.
