Six years behind bars for sexual assault

Brian Hlongwane (29) was sentenced to six years imprisonment on April 14, after he was found guilty, in the Benoni Magistrates Court, of attempted rape and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was also found unfit to possess a firearm.

“On March 3, 2013, at 6.40am, the Crystal Park SAPS was called to a complaint of assault and attempted rape, in Nature Road, in the Benoni Agricultural Holdings,” said Crystal Park SAPS spokesperson Tryna Maritz.

”Apparently the victim was walking in the road when she was accosted by the suspect, who then overpowered her.”

According to Maritz, the woman was dragged into a veld, where Hlongwane assaulted her and tried to rape her.

A passer-by saw what was happening and called the SAPS, who attended the scene, causing Hlongwane to run away.

The police managed to get a full clothing description of the suspect and, while driving around the area, they found him walking in Acorn Street and he was arrested.

“The branch commander, Capt Glen Whitford, thanked the investigating officer, Const Eddie Maborala for his co-operation and investigating skills, regarding the case, and added that they are satisfied with the sentence that was given,” Maritz said.
