EMPD, SAPS arrest 38 at Actonville Hostel

A total of 38 people were arrested in a two-day law enforcement operation at the Actonville Hostel, on Styx Road.

The EMPD and the SAPS swooped on the hostel on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

“Intelligence and information gathered pointed to this hostel as a haven for ATM bombers, truck hijackers and housebreaking suspects,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

“Police blitzed the hostel in search of wanted criminals, illegal firearms, stolen goods and vehicles.

“These efforts yielded 38 arrests, which included wanted criminals, ammunition, stolen copper cables and narcotics.

“Twenty-six of the arrestees were undocumented persons from Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique,” Kgasago said.

These illegal foreigners are destined to be held at Lindela Repatriation Centre before deportation.

Around the Actonville Hostel, police conducted stop-and-searches of numerous vehicles and pedestrians.

Kgasago said 79 citations were issued for various offences and one unroadworthy truck was impounded.

The spokesperson said there will be future swoops on the hostel to clean it up of criminals.

All the arrested suspects were booked in at Benoni Police Station and are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court on Monday, March 30.
