Duck Inn gunman found guilty

Chris Ehlers (47) was found guilty of murdering Leon Roos (44), whom he shot dead at the Duck Inn pub, in Petit, on December, 2012.

Magistrate Mitzi Schutte delivered her verdict in the Benoni Regional Court on March 11.

She found Ehlers guilty of murder, the unlawful possession of a firearm and the unlawful possession of ammunition.

Ehlers and a group of friends, including Roos, were at the Duck Inn on December 20.

An argument erupted between Ehlers and the deceased, over R10 000 that Roos owed the murderer.

The verbal altercation between the two became physical after Roos struck Ehlers, who fell to the ground.

After a second scuffle, when Roos again hit Ehlers, the shooter grabbed Roos by the genitals and the fight subsequently ended.

Ehlers moved behind the pub counter after this confrontation and retrieved a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, which his friend had left behind the counter earlier that day.

The gun had a bullet in the chamber and 14 rounds in the magazine.

Ehlers then struggled with another friend in the bar area, after which the gun fell to the ground.

This man, along with other people, exited from behind the bar counter before a single shot was fired in Roos’s direction.

Roos was shot in the mouth, with the bullet hitting him at a slightly downward trajectory, causing him to fall backwards and becoming lodged in his spinal chord.

Schutte ruled that Ehlers was not found to have acted in self-defence, as there was no direct threat to his life when he grabbed the gun.

The deceased was also found lying outside the area behind the back of the bar.

Roos’s mother, Marie, told the City Times she will never be able to forgive her son’s killer.

“I will only be able to get closure on the whole situation on April 9, when she [Schutte] hands down sentence,” said Roos.

“I am happy he was found guilty of those three charges, but it will never bring back my son.

“I hate him for what he did to Leon and I will never be able to forgive him for what he has done – never.”

Sentencing has been set for April 9 and Ehlers was remanded in custody at Modderbee Prison.
