SPCA denies turning away severely beaten dog

The Benoni SPCA has denied turning away a dog that sustained massive injuries after being beaten by a man wielding a golf club.

Tobie was beaten in Daveyton, in the early hours of Monday morning, and sustained an exploded right eye ball, a broken top jaw and a piercing to its chest.

The owner of the four-year-old Jack Russell mix, Peter Mnguni, told the City Times he was asleep on Monday morning when he heard a dog squeal.

“I woke up and asked the man beating my dog what he was doing,” said Mnguni.

“He ran away and I told him I was going to the police.”

Tobie was beaten outside the property’s perimeter fence, although she was inside the enclosure before the beating.

Mnguni and a friend transported the dog to the Benoni SPCA on Monday morning, to seek medical assistance.

“They (SPCA staff) said there was no doctor,” he said, adding that he was told to “take the dog to the Northmead Mall”.

Samantha Jacobs, who was at the Benoni SPCA when Mnguni arrived with the dog, said she intervened after he was turned away by staff and accompanied the Daveyton resident to the Northmead Veterinary Clinic.

LISTEN to Jacobs comment on the incident:

Manager of the Benoni SPCA Adele Makings told the City Times this morning that an “intense investigation” is under way.

“As far as I can ascertain, the gentleman did not make it to reception,” she said, adding that the society has been in contact with the owner of the dog, who, according to her, did not consult a staff member at the Benoni SPCA on the day of the incident.

“It is a very serious matter and we will get to the bottom of it,” she said.

Jacobs and Mnguni were at the Benoni Police Station this morning, to open a case of animal cruelty.

Mnguni said he has decided to hand over Tobie to a Benoni family after she is released from the vet.

He does not want a another dog after this ordeal.

“I feel so bad, because I like my dog,” he added.
