Sixty years and going strong

“I promised her I would live with her for the rest of my life, I never thought of getting divorced once – we have love and respect for one another.”

This is how Leo Meyer (85) expressed his love for his wife Catharina “Queenie” Meyer (84), a day after they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

The couple celebrated their anniversary with friends at their home in Rynfield on July 4.

The couple, who have lived in Benoni for over 20 years, met in Durban in 1952, when Leo was in the South African Air Force and his Queenie, a nurse at the Wentworth Hospital.

When Queenie was asked what she loves most about her husband, Leo said: “oh gats, my moaning”.

She went on to say Leo was a very good husband and father, and that she has never wanted another husband.

‘‘Sometimes he is too giving, he cannot say no to people,’’ said Queenie.

‘‘It is in his nature; if you pick up trouble at night he will leave everything and help you.”

Leo said he loves his wife’s understanding the most.

‘‘We have been fighting for 60 years, and it is only love that has kept us together,’’ said Leo.

He offered youngsters and newly-weds tips to love and respect their partner, saving money for their old day, and thinking three times before you have children.

The couple had two children together, Leonie and the late Annelize.
