Deputy minister lauds school uniform donation

A total of 80 disadvantaged pupils started the school week wearing brand new school uniforms, which were donated to them as part of the third annual Chris Dlamini Dress a Learner Programme.

The primary school pupils, the majority from Daveyton schools, received their new uniforms at a handover at the Marivate Hall, in Daveyton, on Friday.

The young boys were each given two pairs of pants, two pairs of socks, a tie, a pair of shoes and two shirts.

The girls received a dress, two pairs of socks, a tie, a jersey and shoes.

EnviroServ, a waste management company based in Apex, has spearheaded the growing project for the past three years

The donation ceremony was attended by officials from the Gauteng Education Department, members of the Ekurhuleni Mayoral Committee, EnviroServe’s executive and the Deputy Minister of Public Enterprises, Bulelani Magwanishe, to name a few.

The minister praised EnviroServ’s work in investing in education.

“What you [EnviroServ] have done is to give pride to our children; it is an investment in the future,” said Magwanishe.

“We don’t know, maybe the next general secretary of the United Nations will come from these children.

“When you invest in education, you are investing in the future.

“With the pride that you have given to these children in the past three years, you are indirectly investing in your own company.

“Unless we invest in education, we will not be able to have more people with skills, the net result of that is that companies will now have to import skills, which becomes more expensive.

“We are very happy that you have made the wisest decision with a big heart.”

EnviroServ group CEO Des Gordon said the company is excited about the small difference they are making.

“EnviroServe is committed to our communities and we acknowledge that it is through the grace of communities, like Daveyton and Etwatwa, who partner with us, that we are allowed to do our business,” said Gordon.

“This is our way of giving back to our partners and to look for opportunities where we can make some difference in the lives of people who are living in these communities.

“What better nation-building initiative than to dress a learner.”
