Motorist knocks down pedestrian and drives her to sports club

A man was arrested after knocking down a female pedestrian and then driving the critically injured victim to the Old Benonians Sports Club.

Benoni SAPS acting station commander Col Martin van Nieuwenhuizen told the City Times that the accident occurred at around 1am this morning (January 30).

He could not, at this stage, confirm where the accident took place.

Van Nieuwenhuizen said the suspect loaded the woman onto his bakkie after knocking her down.

The driver of the Bantam bakkie, who is believed to have been the only occupant of the vehicle, drove from the accident scene to the sports club.

The police’s sector vehicle spotted the woman on the back of the vehicle at the sports club.

The station commander understands both the woman’s legs were broken in the accident.

She is currently in a critical condition in the Tambo Memorial Hospital.

The suspect will be charged with attempted murder and reckless and negligence driving.

More charges may be added as the man did not stop and call for medical assistance.

He is expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court on Monday.
