Two Farrarmere women stuck in traumatic Bedford Centre shoot-out drama

Two Farrarmere women were caught up in this morning's shoot-out at the Bedford Centre.

The wife of well-known radio personality Paul Rotherham provided assistance to some of the injured in this morning’s shooting, at around 11.15am.
Zina Rotherham, a Farrarmere resident, who was a victim in an attempted hijacking in June 2012, was at her work in the centre when she heard gun shots.
“I heard a bang, there were guys doing maintenance (in the centre) so I thought the roof had caved in because it was so loud,” Zina told the City Times this afternoon.
Zina said she heard heard screams and about 30 gun shots which she believes were fired from an automatic rifle.
She saw people running away from the scene.
“We closed the shutter to the shop and hid behind the counter because we did not know what was going on,” said Zina.
After some time Zina, who has been trained in first aid, ran down from the upper section of the shopping centre to the scene, which was about 100m from her workplace.
She and a few other people bandaged three of the victims, including a man who was lying a metre from a pistol.
She said the wounded female had a wound in the back, while one of the men had a head wound and two wounds in the abdomen.
The third victim was wounded in the leg and abdomen.
After three minutes she and the other woman who assisted the injured, left the scene as they heard gun shots.
Another Farrarmere resident, Nadine Else, told the City Times she was at the centre to do a cell phone upgrade.
“I was with the guy (at the cellphone shop) and heard a loud bang,” said Else.
“It almost sounded like a ceiling panel that had fallen down – it was a hollow echo.”
She and the cell phone shop employee looked at each other and took cover under the desks with seven to eight other customers.
She said she is still in shock.
