Spayathon for a good cause

The Convenant Life Centre, in Northmead, echoed with howls and barks when The Animal Guardians (TAG) hosted a Spayathon, on Sunday, January 18.

The project enabled pet owners from underprivileged communities to have their dogs sterilised free of charge.”Eighty per cent of the service is free and those who could contribute donated goods for the Tag charity shop,” said Tag member Noeline Clare-Talbot.

A total of seven vets from Boksburg and Benoni gave their time free of charge in order to provide the veterinary service.

“A number of volunteers, such as Nature’s Arc, assisted in shaving the dogs,” said Clare-Talbot.

The goal was to sterilise as many animals as possible.

“The community members really care about their animals, and it doesn’t matter where they live; but they do not have extra money to care for them,” said Clare-Talbot.

The people involved included: Dr Freddy Hurley, Dr Victoria van der Nolen, Dr Peter McDonald, Dr Laurette Vos, Dr Lynn Middleton, Dr Matthew Legg, Dr Charlotte Legg, Dr Venessa Trewick, Lyndsay Ousman, Annalise Jungman and Kate O’Neill.

Golden East 181 Round Table donated R10 000 to Tag, in order to supply them with all the veterinary equipment.

Tag is a non-profit organisation that helps to assist animals from underprivileged communities.

They visit communities in Benoni, Etwatwa and Zenzele, to provide pet owners with food and free sterilisation.

A total of three tons of dog food are needed each month to keep up with the demand.

“Everything we sell in the shop is donated by the public,” said Clare-Talbot.

If you would like to assist the Tag charity shop and the organisation, you can donate clothing, furniture, and dog and cat food.
