Illegal miners arrested, explosives confiscated

The Benoni SAPS arrested 10 illegal miners and seized dynamite from them yesterday afternoon (Wednesday).

Benoni SAPS cluster spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said CMS and the police apprehended the men at around 2.30pm, on the corner of Snake Road and Pioneer Drive.

“Yesterday our members got a call from CMS that there were illegal miners on Pioneer Drive, at the Benoni Gold Mine,” said Sekele.

“The members proceeded to the scene and were told by CMS that 30 miners had been there, but that the others had run away when they saw them.”

Sekele said the suspects are currently at the Benoni Police Station. being charged with possession of explosives and illegal mining.

Sekele said the miners who were arrested were found with explosives in their bags, which were placed in lunch boxes.

She said the SAPS are patrolling the area where the men were arrested.

The suspects will appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court tomorrow.
