Benoni police make over 170 arrests

Benoni police managed to make over 170 arrests during crime prevention operations in the past week.

Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said the operation focused on the A and B crimes.

A total of 142 were arrested for B crimes which included illegal immigrants, drunk in public and drinking in public and traffic-related offences.

Sekele said the Police also made several A crime arrests which includes 28 people being arrested for drug related crimes.

“Others were arrested for reckless and negligence driving, possession of stolen property, malicious damage to property, theft and assault,” said Sekele.

Sekele pleaded with locals to not employ illegal immigrants, especially on a temporary basis, “as most crimes in the area are committed by them”.

“Employing these people gives them inside knowledge into properties and they later come back and rob the very same places that employed them,” she said.

Sekele added that these people are hard to trace, even with fingerprints, because police do not have their profiles.
