Birds fly 660km journey

BHS birds fly from Hanover.

The Benoni Homing Society (BHS) basketed their birds on Thursday, August 14, for their 20th and 21st races from Hanover, about 660km away.

It was a tough race with north-easterly winds and rain on the route.

The young birds went up on Saturday, August 16, at 7.15am while the old birds were liberated at 7.45am.

There were only seven young birds and one old bird back home on the day, the rest would have an overnight.

The first young bird home was for VD Merwes clocking at 5.15.49pm at a velocity of 1,107.154mpm and a massive 15 minutes ahead of the next bird.

The first old bird home was for RA Gullet clocking at 6.02.33pm at a velocity of 1,059.298mpm, seven minutes ahead of the next bird.

  • Young bird results: 1 VD Merwes 1,107.154mpm, 2 RA Gullett 1,079.536mpm, 3 Ronnie Gullett T2 1,077.756mpm, 4 TNT Lofts 1,077.003mpm, 5 Gullhatt 1,054.387mpm.
  • Open bird results: 1 RA Gullett 1,058.297mpm, 2 S Dowd 1,045.879mpm, 3 Jaco Faul 1,009.490mpm, 4 VD Merwes 997.009mpm, 5 L and H De Jager 992.786mpm.
