The company which owns the dog that was chained to a shutter at the Superspar, in Benoni, has cancelled its contract with the supermarket.

Samantha Straub, one of the owners of Canine Solutions, said the contract was cancelled immediately, as the store broke the dog handling agreement and for fear that the dog, Xello, will be chained again.

Canine Solutions hired Xello to the store for security purposes.

The news of the dog being chained to the store emerged on Facebook, at the weekend.

SPCA senior inspector Renee Rossolimos said this morning that the animal welfare organisation collected the German Shepherd at the Superspar, at 10pm, last night.

The inspector said the dog was not ill or harmed.

Straub explained how angry she was with the Spar, but described the incident as ”unfortunate”.

She said the Spar has been doing business with her company for two years, and has never failed to adhere to Canine Solution’s requirements.

Xello has a kennel at the shop, but was not taken to it should the guard have needed to relieve him/herself.

Spar national merchandise executive Mike Prentice said the company has looked into the matter and the dog was chained to the shutter while the security guard went to the toilet.

He added that the Superspar (on the corner of Tom Jones Street and Ampthill Avenue), is owned privately and that the Spar national office has been in contact with the store’s owner.

The owner of the Spar was not available for comment this afternoon, but an employee said they are still investigating the matter and will comment at a later stage.

Xello is in the care of his owners.

People took to Facebook to express their thoughts on the matter.

Radio personality Paul Rotherham said: ” In all fairness, I don’t think we should have a go at Spar until we have the facts.

”It’s possible that they had no idea about this, since it looks like it happened overnight, while the store was closed.

”If they don’t do anything about it, that’s a completely different story.

”Will keep you posted.”

Shirley Ford Wright, said: ”I, for one would NOT support THAT Superspar!!

”Has the dog got water to drink ??”

George Marx, said: ”I think the security guard is responsible for this.

”He probably tied the dog up and went somewhere to sleep.”
