Dog food scare: four contaminated brands removed from shelves

The food will not kill your pet but will most likely result in a less appetising meal for your dog.

FOUR brands of dog food had been removed from shelves after testing had revealed the potential presence of a maize contaminant in certain batches produced June.

Deoxynivalenol (DON) originates from a mould found on maize and is likely to result in a less appetising meal for your dog. The brands are Bobtail™, PnP no name™, Dogmor™ and Bonzo™.

“We understand that this will concern pet owners but we would like to assure you there are no severe side effects,” a spokesman for Foodcorp said in a statement released today.

“It is possible that your pet will either refuse to eat the food or in the most severe case may regurgitate the food consumed. At Foodcorp we know how much you love your pets and we are committed to ensuring they get only the very best quality when it comes to what they eat.

“For this reason we offer you the opportunity to replace your existing bag with a fresh new bag if it was produced during June.”

How would you know if your bag was manufactured during June:

1. Check the manufacturing date on the bag itself. This will have the letters MANF, followed by the date that the bag was packed and the time of production. Check the date carefully to see whether it was manufactured between June 4, 2014 and June 23.

For example: MANF 04/06/14 15:30 – this bag of dog food was produced on the 4th of June and should be replaced.

MANF 07/MAY/14 – this bag of dog food was produced on the 7th of May. This date is before the 4th of June 2014 and so this bag of dog food will not need to be replaced.

2. If the date of manufacture falls between June 4 and 23, contact the hotline number on 011 411 5555 between 8am and 5pm to receive your voucher for a free new bag of dog food.

3. Visit your local supermarket and give them the voucher in order to get your replacement bag of Bobtail™, PnP no name™, Dogmor™ or Bonzo™.

“Retailers are restocking their shelves with fresh new bags of these brands and any products now available in supermarkets have been assessed in terms of quality and can be purchased with the assurance they carry our seal of approval.”
