Actonville marches against drug abuse

Say NO to drugs and save our children

Despite a disappointing and poor turnout, about 65 people, including a few young children and teenagers, marched resolutely through the streets of Actonville, carrying anti-drug placards and shouting “Say NO to drugs” and “Save our children”.

The march, on June 28, concluded at the car park opposite Primrose Court, where a petition for the attention of the station commander of Actonville, Col Fredl Jonck, was handed over to and accepted by Capt Ntombikayise Modise on his behalf.

The SAP has agreed to respond to the petition within two weeks.

The petition requests that priority be given to locating the drug lords and pedlars in the community and that appropriate action be enforced to stop them from continuing to ply their trade.

The SAPS are also asked to look into setting up a safe means of communication between the community and the SAPS, whereby community members with drug-related information will be empowered, without fear of intimidation, to pass on the information for action.

Sadly, although the issue of drugs is rife in Actonville, the total lack of interest, concern and participation, by the community at large is appalling, said march organiser Jeannet Johnson.

“The participants were very happy that their little effort has created awareness and sent out a message to the youth and children in their community that drug use brings destruction, and they will continue to persevere in the fight against drugs,” she said.

This evil is spreading its ugly tentacles and still we ignore the dangers. People of Actonville, wake up, it may be your child next!
