Housebreaking a problem for SAPS

Heed the SAPS tips to reduce risk

The Crystal Park SAPS’s biggest headache at the moment is the occurrence of housebreaking. The station is conducting daily operations in the area and has the help of community foot patrollers to curb crime.

Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz made the following safety tips available, to reduce people’s risk of falling prey to crime:

n Ensure all windows and doors are properly closed and locked when you leave home.

n Gates must be locked at all times.

n If possible, install an alarm system.

n Ensure that you have a good relationship with your neighbours, so that you will be in a good position to support and help each other.

n Inform your neighbours when you are going on holiday.

n Ensure that ladders etc., (that can be used to gain entry to the property) are locked away when not in use.

n Close the curtains as soon as you switch on your lights, so that criminals cannot see inside your house.

n Inform the police of empty or vacant houses, as they are hiding places for criminals.

Maritz said people must report all suspicious vehicles (try to document the registration number) and persons to the SAPS immediately.
