Rossouw rules the roost

A prestigious women's snooker tournament was held in Benoni over the long weekend.

The Easterns Billiards and Snooker Association (ESBA) hosted the Women’s 2014 South African Snooker Championships from Friday, June 13, to Monday, June 16.

The prestigious tournament, consisting of 6-Red and 15-Red formats and held at The Matchroom, at 116 Pretoria Road, Rynfield, featured some of the best female snooker players in the country and the action on the tables did not disappoint.

It was Central Gauteng player Nicola Rossouw who would receive all the plaudits after winning both the 6-Red and the 15-Red championships.

After beating Joy Willenberg (who had the highest break of 31 in the tournament) 3-0 in the semi-final, Rossouw went on to defeat Beverly Bell 3-2 in the 6-Red final.

Not content with being just the 6-Red champion, Rossouw held firm in the 15-Red final against Willenberg, with a 3-1 win in a best of five frames match.

Sam Louw, the president of the South African Billiards and Snooker Association, was in attendance at the final and praised The Matchroom for running a professional tournament.

“I am quite surprised at how the standard of snooker at the tournament has risen since last year,” he said.

The winner, Rossouw, will now represent the country at the IBSF Women’s World Snooker Championships, in Bangalore, India, in November.
