Shannon makes the cut

Benoni High School matriculant Shannon Roscher (23) has been selected as a finalist for Miss Earth South Africa.

Miss Earth South Africa is a leadership programme that aims to empower young South African women with knowledge and a platform to create a sustainable difference to combat the destruction of our natural heritage.

It creates awareness of sustainable development, the environment, wildlife and the conservation of natural legacy in South Africa.

Roscher was inspired to enter the competition by the current Miss Earth, Ashanti Mbanga, at the beginning of March, and was chosen as one of the finalists on April 10.

“My goal is to win Miss Earth South Africa, as I’ve always been passionate about helping people,” Roscher said.

“Miss Earth aims to promote peace, respect and humility towards one another.

“Winning Miss Earth South Africa would mean the world me; it will give me a platform to spread my message to many ears across our country, and possibly internationally.

“To me it is not just about winning the title, it’s using the title to make a real and positive difference in the world.

It would be an honour to represent the brand and to inspire many other young girls.

“Miss Earth is my passion, just in organisation form.

“Miss Earth would be me, finally finding myself and my life calling.”

Roscher has entered a few pageants and won every one in which she has participated.

During the month of May she will be building a sustainable veggie garden for a less fortunate school in Dawn Park, and also providing desk bags, blankets, clothing and garden tools.

Roscher hopes that, in her lifetime, she can at least changed someone’s life in a drastic way

“I am the best possible version of myself at all times, because I hope to inspire others,” she said.

“Changing the world seems like a pipe dream to everyone, but to me it is not a dream, I will leave my legacy behind and I will make this world a better place because everyone deserves to have their own piece of heaven on earth.”

The second cut of the pageant will be held on June 12, and the winner will be announced at the grande finale, in August.

Roscher recently won the best up-and-coming PR professional award, at the PRISA PRISM awards ceremony, and has represented South Africa at polo; these have been some of her best achievements thus far.

The biggest challenge for Roscher has been juggling Miss Earth and work commitments.

Roscher lived with her family in Benoni, but has since relocated to Boksburg and hopes, in five years time, to take over from her mother, who owns the PR Worx company.

She has already started raising funds and collecting items to give to people in need.
