EMPD Choir sings out

The EMPD Choir has, through the years, developed into a formidable group that is now counted among choirs of long-standing, such as the JMPD and Soweto choirs.

The choir has grown to 50 members, having been established in 2007, with 10 members in its fold.

EMPD spokesman Wilfred Kgasago said the purpose of the choir is to play a role during community safety departments’ memorial and funeral services; to close the gap between the law enforcement fraternity and the communities they serve; to educate the community about the police environment; to engage in community activities and programmes; to promote Batho Pele Principles and to ensure the well-being of employees through music.

Orphanages and homes such as the Tembisa Orphanage, Mohau Orphanage, Disabled Persons in Vosloorus and the Tholakele Orphanage Home, in Kwa-Thema, are some of the homes that have benefited greatly from the choir’s efforts to raise funds, by organising concerts and soliciting assistance from businesses and churches.

Items donated included electrical appliances, blankets, clothing and groceries, among others.

Choral festivals are held annually, with the aim of reducing the plight of these homes.
