Excellent results for Smith

Benoni’s Slade Smith (13) raced in the second rounds of both the South African National MSA and WOMZA Motocross Championships, over the Easter weekend, in the Cape.

Starting with the South African National MSA Motocross Championships, at the Zone 7 track, Smith, racing on his CIT Pretoria Husqvarna, won the first heat of the 85cc Junior Class in fine style, but then had an unfortunate puncture in the closing stages of the second heat.

Despite the setback, he managed to hold on for a third position in this very precarious situation with his bike, giving him a second overall for the day.

The youngster also races in the bigger class, called the Pro Mini Class, 85cc big wheels, where he posted the second fastest lap time in practise, by 300ths of a second, and finished a credible third and fourth in his two heats, giving him a fourth overall for the day against the older boys.

Smith then moved to the sandy Melkbos track for the WOMZA Motocross Championships, which are held over two days.

Here Smith was much faster in practise and qualifying, and went on to win all three of his heats in the 85cc Junior Class, posting unbelievably faster lap times than his fellow competitors on his CIT Pretoria Husqvarna.

In the Pro Mini Class, he managed a third, fourth and fifth in his three heats, giving him a fifth overall for the day.

He also won the hole-shot prizes in both the 85cc and Pro Mini classes.

It was an all round brilliant result for Smith for the weekend’s national placings.

The year is still young, but he plans to hold onto his number one place, by defending his 2013 title.

He has the 2014 85cc South African National MSA Championship firmly in his sights.

Smith will now move to the Springfield Track, in KwaZulu-Natal, on May 24, for the third round of the MSA National Motocross Championships.
