Where and how to vote and what to take

May 7 has been set aside for the national and provincial elections around the country.

Please remember that you must be a registered voter in South Africa in order to vote.

To confirm that your name is on the voters’ roll and to find out which voting station you’re registered at, check your voter registration status online or SMS your ID number to 32810.

You need to vote at the voting station where you’re registered to vote.

However, if you’re outside your voting district on Election Day you may vote at another voting station in South Africa.

If you’re outside the province where you’re registered, you’ll only be able to vote in the national election and not the provincial election, and you’ll be asked to complete a form (VEC 4) at the voting station.

Voting stations are open from 7am to 9pm on May 7.

You can’t use your driver’s licence, passport, registered copy of ID book, library card or anything other than a temporary ID, a bar coded ID book or a new ID card.

If you have lost an ID get to a Home Affairs office as quickly as you can.

They will also be open on election day.

Once at the voting station, the following is the procedure to vote:

  •  Show your green, bar-coded, South African ID book or a temporary identification certificate to the voting officer.
  •  The voting officer checks that your name appears on the voters’ roll.

If you are not on the voters’ roll, but have proof that you have registered

(eg registration sticker), the presiding officer must validate your

proof of registration.

If the officer is satisfied with the proof, you must complete a VEC4 form (national elections) and will then be allowed to continue as an ordinary voter.

  •  Once the voting officer is satisfied that you have the correct ID, are a

registered voter and have not already voted, your name is marked off the

roll, your ID is stamped on the second page and your thumbnail is

inked.

  •  The voting officer stamps the back of the correct number of official ballot paper/s and gives them to you.
  •  Take your ballot paper/s to an empty ballot booth, mark the ballot paper,

fold it so that your choice isn’t visible and place the ballot paper in

the ballot box.
