Marjorie celebrates her 100th birthday

Farrarmere resident Marjorie Lilias Jacobsen celebrated her 100th birthday on March 22.

On the day, a number of her family members and friends threw a small garden tea party for her.

Jocelyn Young, Marjorie’s granddaughter, said her grandmother is proud of turning 100

Longevity runs in the Jacobsen family.

“Granny has always proclaimed longevity as a special gift,” said Jocelyn.

She has enjoyed good health over the years and has been hospitalised only for hip replacements.

Marjorie Posnot was born in Pietermaritzburg, on March 22, 1914.

She met her husband, Frederick William Jacobsen, in Pietermaritzburg.

He worked for the South African Post Office, while she worked as a sales consultant at John Orrs.

In September, 1936, the couple were married.

They had two children, Denise Young and Barry Jacobsen.

In 1978 William and Marjorie moved to Benoni to live with their daughter.

William died on July 15, 1987, from emphysema.

For many years Marjorie played bowls at the Northmead Bowling Club, and earned a number of awards.

She has seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She is described as the life and soul of dinner parties and gatherings.

“She has a great sense of humour, is very determined and a great example to us all of tenacity and courage,” concluded Jocelyn.
