Hijacking suspect pinned under car

A suspected car hijacker is lying in pain in hospital, after his alleged accomplice drove over him in the process of stealing a car.

Two men were hijacking a Wooton Avenue resident’s car at around 6.30am this morning (March 25), when the incident occurred.

The vehicle owner reversed his car out of the garage and then got out to close the garage door.

“But, when he turned around, he noticed that someone had jumped into his vehicle,” said police spokesman Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

Sekele said the hijacker reversed the car quickly but, in the process, he ran over another man, who was running towards the car, apparently to try to get in.

Realising that the other man was pinned under the car, the driver jumped out and ran away, leaving the bleeding suspect at the scene.

“He told the victim to take care of his friend, as he ran,” said Sekele.

The man was taken to hospital under police guard and will be arrested as soon as he is discharged.
