Neighbours battle with sewer leak

Since March 2, neighbours at 67 and 65 Swellendam Street, in Brentwood Park, have had to live with the awful stench emanating from a blocked and overflowing sewer pipe.

Resident Liezl Lewis has reported the problem to the metro on numerous occasions.

“The health inspector has been to see this over the weekend, but still, no progress,” she said.

“I addition, I’ve been in contact with Ronald (who is supposed to be in a managing position at the sewage department), but no feedback at all.

“I’ve also been in contact with Oupa (acting director of the Water and Sewage department) but made no further progress either.”

Lewis added: “In fact, we’ve been begging the municipality for help–what more do we need to do in order to resolve this?

“Is this not supposed to be top priority as the community is subject to this serious health issue?,” she asked.

On March 13, Ekurhuleni metro said it is attending to the matter.

“The delays incurred due to the saturated land where our big vacuum tanks should stand and operate and our attempt to access the sites with the truck thwarted when it got stuck in the mud,” said metro spokesperson Lebogang Ramashala.

Also, Ramashala said, the access of storm water into our sewer lines delays the vacuuming of sewer lines.

“We are hoping that with the reduction in rainfall, another dispatched truck will assist in relieving the overflowing pipe,” she said

Ramashala said their teams are working tirelessly to finalise the repairs as the blocked section of the pipe is at the open veld, and away from the nearest road or solid ground.

“We will endeavour to complete the repairs before the end of today (March 13), should weather conditions remain dry.”
