Sport = a longer life

Willowmoore Park was buzzing with activity on the night of Wednesday, January 15, when the Titans battled the Warriors in a Ram Slam T20 cricket match that was well worth the entrance fee for spectators.

The action on the field was enough to delight any cricket lover but there was something else that stood out for this sports writer and that was the young KFC Mini Cricket players from Farrarmere Primary School who had the opportunity to meet their cricket heroes, assist with the coin toss and serve as ball boys and girls along the Willowmoore boundary.

The aim of the KFC Mini Cricket initiative is to get children active by playing the sport.

Sure, not every child that plays mini-cricket is going to be the next Jacques Kallis or AB de Villiers but what the initiative does allow is for youngsters to keep a healthy and active lifestyle while having fun at the same time.

I have always been a proponent of sport for a healthier life and although I am not a “fitness freak” myself I do partake in a little bit of indoor soccer and go for the odd jog at least twice a week just to get the heart rate up.

Benoni is fortunate to have incredibly fit and healthy senior citizens like 90-year-old swimmer Lorna Cochrane (the oldest ever finisher of the Midmar Mile) and 82-year-old Christie du Plooy (master runner) who inspire young people to lead a healthy lifestyle.

They are the truest examples of the benefits of living an active life.

Do your bit to get your heart beating faster at least once or twice a week because, as the international fitness consultant Melody Carstairs once said: ““No body is worth more than your body”.
